Mentors… Nehemiah

Nehemiah…this man from many centuries ago and his story recorded in the Old Testament has been such a relatable and significant example for us, a true mentor for us!

God gives us mentors in our modern day lives and we desperately need them. No matter how old we are, we need the wisdom of others.

This idea of mentoring is foundational for our Casa de Gracia team! Mentoring is one of the 3 pillars our program will be built upon!

But how much more incredible is it to realize that God has given us mentors in His large & loving letter to us called the Bible?!?

Nehemiah is one of those incredible mentors to us! As we read his story, we see how God brought to his attention a big problem that was dishonoring and offensive to God. This broke Nehemiah’s heart. He cried out to the Lord in prayer and fasting. Then he went to work. The work was hard and met by many roadblocks along the way. There were doubters and mockers and gossipers. But Nehemiah prayed and stayed! He continued steadfast in the job God had tasked him with. He kept his eyes and his heart fixed on God and what God wanted of him. God had called Nehemiah to deal with something that was broken; the walls and city gates of Jerusalem were broken, abandoned and in terrible disrepair. In our case, to deal with a broken system that's leaving in total disrepair and abandonment the lives of young people that are especially dear to God's heart.

Nehemiah is an amazing story and the more we have studied it, the more it has encouraged our hearts and fueled us on!!

We thank God for the mentors He gives us.

We seek to be the mentors He calls us to be.

We thank Him for the Biblical mentors like Nehemiah that teach us still today!

Nehemiah 1:4-11• Nehemiah’s Prayer…

As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven. “And I said, O LORD God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father’s house have sinned. We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded your servant Moses. Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples, but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there? They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of your servants who delight to fear your name, and give success to your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”
